Canada Day 2012

Another great Canada Day celebration from City of Surrey in Cloverdale. This year was highlighted by an appearance by Canada's golden boy, Sam Roberts. Fun was had, food was consumed and flags were waved. The only damper was the Glastonbury-like mud pits, but it did not stop people from dancing and enjoying themselves. Can't wait to see what Surrey has in store next year. Until then, Fusion Fest is just around the corner.

Halloween Ball at Science World 2011

So I completely forgot about blogging altogether the last month or so. I have been so wrapped up in worked and sitting at a computer after sitting at one for 8 hours isn't so appealing sometimes. It will just have to be me making more of an effort and getting back into a bit of a routine for myself. Maybe choose one day a week to blog and work my way up. I like my job, it took awhile to get a grasp on some things but now that I know what it is I'm doing and have more confidence in it, it isn't so bad. The company is pretty cool and the people are great, it's the commute and waking up super insane early that suck. I am really looking forward to that extra hour of sleep!

As you can see from the photo, Halloween was spent at the costume ball and it was a lot of fun. I doubt I'd do that venue again at that price ($55) but if you're under 25 and single- go forth! I am really digging this new Gomez tune, Options. Been awhile since I've heard from them.

I absolutely love this song by the White Rock folk-indie band, The Oh Wells. They performed last weekend at the Spirit of the Sea but I missed them due to a bout of sunstroke. Coincidentally, lead singer Sarah Jinkling did as well. See them live at Cates Park in North Vancouver this Saturday at 6pm.

MotherMoon

Normally I would not be posting about a show in Toronto when I live in Vancouver,but I've just come across a great new artist from New York's East Village, who in short, is amazing.

MotherMoon has the sound reminiscent of a time long before she was born and a talent that will grow with each note. Compared to Norah Jones and Billie Holiday, singer Ashley Selett has the smooth and hypnotic voice perfect for an afternoon of new memories with someone special or a simple day in the sun. Listening to "Heat" from her album "Writing In The Sky" is a nostalgic journey to a time when a voice and a melody meant something and were the foundation of any great career. Let's hope this continues for MotherMoon because she's won me over and I can't wait to see her live in Vancouver sometime soon. You can listen to a sample of her songs here.

Hey Rosetta At The Rio Theatre

Hey Rosetta put on a beautifully arranged set to a sold out crowd at the Rio Theatre on Friday night that I was lucky enough to cover. Gramercy Riffs opened the show and were new to me. A friend ended up picking up a copy of their album so I will be checking that out for sure. Hey Rosetta played a few new songs such as "Seeds" from their new EP and some of the (already) classics from their second album such as "Red Heart" and "I've Been Asleep For A Long Long Time."

But what really stole the show was a cover of Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time." Amazing. You gotta see it. Dan Mangan did!
